Episode 037: On this week’s episode of Real Health Radio I am looking at setting up and running a successful practice.
I share what I think has been most helpful for me and some of the pitfalls. I go through my story and journey from start to where I am today to provide context for some of the suggestions but to also give a real life example of what it’s like.

Great episode, thank you so much for sharing! 2 quicks questions regarding the 5 month contract: 1- do you find people balk at the larger price tag? 2- If you had it to do over again, would you start out doing only 5 month contracts from the beginning? Or do you feel there’s any value in doing some shorter term engagements just to get experience and reps under your belt?
Hi Drew,
In answer to your questions:
1. I have my prices on my site and make sure people have seen them before we chat. For any people who balk at the prices, we never speak because they don’t bother getting in contact with me (or decline the chat as soon as they find out). And when we do chat I can justify everything we do and will cover and why my prices are what they are and why we need to work together for the length of time I suggest.
2. This is a tough one to answer because I think it comes down to confidence and knowing you can deliver. I don’t think I would have had the confidence to sell a 5 month package when I started but now I know I feel very comfortable in my ability and anything less feels too short. So while I feel it was crucial to me getting better results with clients and creating a more sustainable business, for someone new in my opinion it takes a while to move up to this. But with that said, I do see people doing it these days who are just starting out so maybe it is doable (but I don’t see how many people they are signing up so I don’t know if it is working or not). Personally in the beginning I feel your better prioritising seeing as many people as possible. Not under charging, but getting as much experience with clients.
I hope that helps.
Chris
Hi Chris,
I really enjoyed listening to this podcast. I am looking to begin my own private practice as a dietitian in 2017 and what you said really resonated with me and I especially identify the bit about feeling like a fraud who knows nothing! Thanks for the reminder that this isn’t going to be easy but will likely be worth it. I like your authentic and realistic approach.
